CT YD's call for Student Reps on Boards of Education

I just got an email release from the Connecticut Young Democrats who are working with state Rep. Andy Fleischmann to have student representatives serve on local boards of election.

House Bill 6665 was announced at a press conference today and according to the release

"would mandate that towns have at least one high school student serve on their Board of Education as a non-voting member. The number of students from each high school and the method in which they are chosen shall be determined by the local or regional Board of Education.

"In these difficult economic times we ask our representatives and senators to give us more services, better government and we ask that they make these improvements without raising our taxes. H. B. 6665 provides a great benefit for the residents of Connecticut and does not cost a dime," said Adam Blank of the Connecticut Young Democrats.

The bill guarantees that student's voices are heard and that when important decisions about their schools are made they are part of the decision making process.

"Having student Board of Education Representatives allows students to communicate with the administration, Board of Education and the community about school events such as sports, fundraisers, and Student Council activities," said Andrew Bannon-Guasp, a high school student who currently serves on the Board of Education in West Hartford for Conard High School. "The representatives should also weigh in on new policy and offer a student viewpoint. Being a student representative also provides the student with a valuable life experience in public service and local politics."

H. B. 6665 will be heard at a public hearing of the Education Committee at 1:30 today in room 1E.

"For eight years, I've had the pleasure of serving with several outstanding student representatives seated with us at the Board table," Harry Captain of the West Hartford Board of Education said. "The real time input from Conard and Hall student reps has been invaluable. Their representation ensures that the student perspective is heard and influences matters of policy, budget, and the district's academic direction."
