Take Back America (Updated)

In about five minutes I'm jumping in a car and heading down to DC to attend the Take Back America 2007 Conference. I'm going to try and do one or two "live-blogs" from there, though that will depend a bit on getting some free time. Either way, if you're reading this, and you're attending the conference and would like to meet up, let me know in comments. If you're in DC, but not planning on going to the conference, you should still come out to the Drinking/Living Liberally parties. There's one on both Monday and Tuesday night.

Update 1: I'm heading to a panel on youth voting right now. I'll see how it goes.

Update 2: Fred and I have added some comments on the conference below.

Update 3 (by mike): Here's our own Alex UA talking to the Dodd campaign about student loan transparency and reaching out to young voters:

Here with Alex UA and

this coalition the panel’s theme is:

“We’ve Got Issues: Young People In Action”

I’ll say that orgs prepare presentations for funding, naturally, and that’s great. These presentations tend to be about providing metrics and selling the use of the org.

Cool.

What’s not great or cool is when these same presentations are shown at liberal conferences when the audience is made up of either members of the orgs or representatives of orgs that are similar to the point of redundancy.

what is the point

why don’t these orgs take the opportunity to build alliances and plan on actions they can take together and on what terms.

ugh.

Getting better...

First of all, all of the speakers are young people, which is a refreshing change from the “expert” panels that we usually see. It does mean that it is a bit less focused, and some of the presentations are better than others, but on the whole I’m really impressed.

The last three speakers were really good. The first was a young woman from Appalachia who gave a poetic speech about something that we’ve discussed here alot: the disconnect between progressive political groups and the social justice movement. It was a really amazing speech, and I don’t even want to try to reproduce it. I’ll try and find the video after the conference. They are recording it- lets hope they make them public.

The second is a young man of Salvadoran dissent, and his speech dealt with a lot of issues facing minority and immigrant youth. He’s from an organization called Barrios Unidos, and they seem to be doing very similar work to IDAAY, who I have blogged about in the past. He also did a really, really amazing thing while he spoke. When he began he was dressed in what I guess you could call “typical” gang gear (he was in a gang). But as he spoke he began removing his head gear, his clothes, etc. Under his clothes he ended up having on scrubs and a full medical getup. Though he spent time in jail, though he had always been told that he would never amount to anything. And now he is studying to become a doctor.

Anyway, after a slow start I think it ended on a really, really good note. Hopefully the rest of the conference will measure up to this panel.

I’m definitely impressed.

it would be so awesome if they post the video online somewhere maybe on iTunes or something even
