Footage from the Field

Sam Graham-Felsen, who covers the youth movement beat for The Nation, was on the ground at yesterday's NYU protest. Watch his video report or read his thoughts on the day - which echo my own - here on The Nation's blog.

Inre my comment on the previous post, while there’s lots of room for improvement, this kind of event can serve as a catalyst for organization, recruitment, networking, etc.

True, but . . .

Yes, you’re right. This clearly galvanized the campus left and was a net positive for progressive activism and awareness on campus.

But also note what one kid said during the video - most people there aren’t part of the College Democrats. In fact very few are. I’d need to double check, but was the counter protest organized by the college democrats? Or by another, concerned student? It points to a weakness in the College Democrats that I’ve heard echoed quite a bit - insular, cliquey, not diverse (culturally - in the broadest sense - ie non-aspiring politicos).

Clearly lots of room for improvement in campus activism - on the part of College Democrats and through other campus outlets.

Yes true

It would appear that an ad-hoc network organization of “regular” progressive students outperformed the institution once again. :)

I think your point about the lack of “non-aspiring politicos” is dead on. This is part of what I see as a flaw in the “long march” model of change. More on this later.
