Live Blog: State Senator Donald Betts Jr., Kansas

It is good to be back to be blogging with you. I enjoyed our last session together and I look forward to answering questions you may have, but before I do I would like to give you an update. Since I've last blogged, the campaign has been picking up everyday. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, came down to Wichita, to present a $5000.00 endorsement from the CBC. Governor Kathleen Sebelius was a special guest at a fundraiser for me, where she endorsed my campaign. I have been on the phone everyday raising money, and meeting with future constituents all over the fourth congressional district. Things are getting very exciting around here, I have even worn out my first set of walking shoes.

Thanks for coming back, Senator!

Senator Betts, thanks for coming back for another chat with us. Can you tell us how your race has evolved since you were here in May?

Are you closer to your opponent, further away? I'm wondering how winnable the district is (since we did not talk about that last time) and what you are doing to be/make it competitive.

Building a Network for Office

In your previous visit here, you mentioned that at times growing up you very poor and moved often between family, shelters and motels. Yet now you are running or Congress. It's an inspiring story and I'd like to hear more about it.

I think a lot of people think of elected officials as highly affluent and well-networked people. How did you build that network to boost yourself into office and win that seat in the state house?

Thanks for coming

What are your thoughts on reaching out to young voters living in rural areas?

Two questions

Hey, Sen. Betts, it's Will Swanson from your future Congressional district here. The economy is a huge concern for most people in this country, especially right now, so I had two questions for you:

First, what kinds of new regulations, if any, do you propose to put on banks and bond-rating agencies to reduce the conflicts of interest and the deception that led to the mortgage crisis which brought on this tide of misfortune?

Second, where do you stand on fiscal discipline measures such as PAYGO, DOD budget constraints, and general spending cuts? In that vein, what role do you believe the government ought to play in the economy?

People Over Politics

We are on my opponent's heels. We are getting the message out in terms of where we differ on the issues. We bring attention to the fact that Tiahrt is number 6 in Congress who has received the top support from Big Oil companies, and we are putting people over politics. We are giving the people the truth about Tiahrt's record, regarding the G.I. Bill, the Farm Bill, SCHIP, and the list goes on.

We've been in every parade in the district, the reception is wonderful, and we have recruited volunteers from all over the 4th District. People are excited and ready for a change. People are tired of politics as usual.his race is about the people. Not special interests.

With your help and support spreading the message on dynamic blogs such as Future Majority, we can turn the tide and set this nation on a course to a better future.

Ultimately we will elect leaders who will speak for the people, and I am one of those individuals.

Communication with Millennials

Hi Senator Betts! Thanks for your time today.

Being young yourself, how have you taken advantage of your age in communicating with young people in the district to become involved in your campaign?

bergerc84, Honestly, my

bergerc84,

Honestly, my youth has helped me identify some of the issues that young people face and the concern that we have for our future. My wife and I were recently married. We do not have children yet, but this deficit has us concerned about the debt our children will one day have to pay. The rising cost of student loans, job availability that provides a living wage, and even Social Security and Healthcare are problems that require solutions now, not when they become an impossible problem.

Finally, young people are about keeping it real. Not about the political rhetoric. They want to know the truth, so they can dig into the trenches and continue to make this country the best nation in the world to raise a family.

Thank you

Thanks Senator. Good luck!

Thanks nviviani. We're doing another live blog next week with US Senate candidate Andrew Rice. I'll look into using Coveritlive and see if it works better for us. Hope you'll stop by.

The future of energy in Kansas

Sen. Betts,

You voted against the construction of new coal power plants in kansas, presumably in favor of wind generattion. Right now it's about 100 degrees in Kansas, and there's very little wind blowing at the moment. Under your plan, what should we do on days like this when it's hot and there's no wind?

KansasB, I did not support

KansasB,

I did not support the coal fire plant legislation because it did not offer any alternatives. 85% of the energy that would be generated by these plants would have gone to Colorado, and Kansas would have been responsible for 100% of the solution. It takes water to run these coal fire plants. And western Kansas is struggling when it comes to the amount of water available to make a living, let alone the addition of these plants.

Some proponents of the coal fire plant have said that those would provide jobs for Kansans. However, the number of jobs available would be in the construction sector at first, and it was not definite in the bill that employees of the plant would be from Kansas. We need to look to the long term to provide long-lasting jobs and security, not to mention a healthy environment for the citizens of this state.

THANK YOU

As a breathing Kansan I thank you for your vote against the coal plants

Mike, In regard to your

Mike,

In regard to your interest in my past, I have developed as a leader in the Kansas legislature through the contacts I made in college, my community, and my church. I ultimately believe that I can do what I set out to do. I have often said that my faith has allowed me to work with people from the projects to the country club, and all those networks have developed to the person I am today.

To put it straight, I was raised by a village.

Registration and Voter Turnout

In our first exchange, you mentioned that Governor Sebelius vetoed a voter ID law that would have disenfranchised many voters. It's great to see Democrats playing good defense in Kansas, but what would be your plan to actively promote greater participation in elections through legislation?

Are there any Same-Day, Election-Day, or Vote-by-Mail proposals in the legislature and do they stand a chance of becoming law?

I have philosophy that if

I have philosophy that if you don't vote, you don't have a right to complain. If anyone cares about our government, then they should participate in the voting process. And right now, you are right. There is sector of Kansans who would be disenfranchised by such a law. We need to combat this, so that people can exercise their rights as given to them by the Constitution. Coming from a home where my mother had to work sometimes two jobs, it's impossible to go to the polls during the week - even with the Advance Balloting.

I would propose a Saturday vote for the convenience of working-class Americans.

I actually offered an amendment that would provide a voter ID for all citizens who did not have identification to vote. I would also propose legislation for Same-Day vote. The Secretary of State's office was unable to find even one case of voter fraud.

Kevin, As a student at

Kevin,

As a student at Friends U. I developed friendships with young men and women who were raised on the farm. They serve on my issues committee. When I visit rural areas, I make it a point to learn about rural issues, such as water, rights, education and especially issues that concern the younger members of that community. As a State Senator, I've been everywhere from Jetmore to Howard.

Young people, both in the urban and rural communities, want their piece of the American dream. I will work with all communities to make their dreams a reality.

Rural Broadband

I have a related question - so much depends on the internet now. It can be a gateway towards activism, as all of us here have found, and it can be a valuable resource for employment as people in rural areas can telecommute. Is this an issue in Kansas and what are your plans for it?

Ending Genocide in Darfur

Hey Senator Betts,

I have a question for you about your stance on genocide. As a constituent that has strongly appreciated your constant support of anti-genocide legislation and initiatives, I would like to know how your role as a member of Congress will impact your actions in regards to ending the genocide in Darfur?

Thank you and best of luck!
Matthew Heck

Matthew, Unlike my opponent,

Matthew,

Unlike my opponent, my votes have always and will always reflect what I say to my District. I will always support legislation that fights against any injustices against any people the world over.

The United States has a history of coming to the aid of the poor, the hungry, and those searching for the values of freedom and equality that we take for granted. I will always be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, and seek to re-establish our nation's respect and honor around the world.

That is exactly why I worked to get divestment legislation passed in the Kansas Senate.

PS - Thank you for running to D.C. to bring attention to this issue.

A follow-up on energy

Sen. Betts,

The electric company purchased water rights for the water the plant would use. If not for the power plant, that same amount of water could, and would, be used anyway for crop irrigation.

Why are we opposed to exporting things manufactured in Kansas? Don't we love to export wheat and airplanes?

And again, what do we do on hot days with no wind? Hook up our computers to old sewing machines?

The truth is there is not

The truth is there is not one right answer. We have to take several forms of energy -- oil, solar, wind, coal -- and balance it out. Being dependent on one source of energy alone will put us in the same situation we are in now. It is imperative that we, as young leaders, create options for a healthy future.

In order to be a succesful person, you can not simply take only Math in school. You need to take Sciences, Languages, English, Art, Music, Shop, and Home Economics. In the same way we, as a nation, have to diversify our energy options in order to remain successful and independent.

Keeping talent in Kansas

Sen. Betts, I was talking to KS Rep. Raj Goyle and he discusses a concept that he calls the "brain drain" where well-educated and highly qualified people from Kansas are choosing to enter the work force out of college by persuing jobs outside of Kansas. What do you think could (or should) be done to keep these essential men and women in Kansas?

Kurt, I can reflect on my

Kurt,

I can reflect on my peers from college, and nearly all of them have left the state. I think it is important for young leaders to identify the changes needed to make this state one that we can be proud of.

That's why we need leaders to be vocal on increased wages. We need young leaders to speak up and challenge their legislators, business leaders, and community leaders to adopt this challenge as their own. As much as I may wish to legislate in order to keep bright, young people in this state, I can only play my role as a young leader myself and give them advice and opportunities that they will not find if they leave their home state.

I have been involved with 40 Under 40, Leadership Kansas, the American Council of Young Political Leaders. I've travelled all over the world, and Kansas is still, in my opinion, one of the best places in the world to raise a family. Those same individuals who left right after college are now returning to pitch their tent right here in Kansas. Many of those Kansans, like Rep. Goyle, have come back home to raise their families.

I hate cliche, but it really is like Dorothy said: there's no place like home.

Kansas Youth

Not being in your district (or state), I take a 30,000 foot view of Kansas politics, and I'm wondering what young voters are like in your state. Are they as progressive as on all issues as young voters are nationally? Or are there some issues on which they are more conservative?

Wichita public schools

Sen. Betts,

Have you ever been employed by the Wichita public school district?

KansasB, Yes, I have been

KansasB,

Yes, I have been employed by USD 259 as a substitute teacher and an assistant for the Circle of Friends program. Check them out at www.buildingthecircle.org!

Enviros

Hey Donald! Thanks so much for doing the live blog!

T. Boone Pickins has called Kansas (indeed the midwest) the Saudi Arabia of Wind Energy - what do you think about his plan to reduce our dependency on foreign oil by using wind?

Thanks again!!
sarah

Sarah, After Mr. Pickens has

Sarah,

After Mr. Pickens has made all of his money in oil, now he sees the light. Wind energy will create jobs in the state of Kansas through the construction of wind turbines, transmission lines will supplement incomes for struggling farmers, and environmentally it will reduce carbon emissions.

The truth is, Mr. Pickens is a businessman first, and money talks. He sees the future, and knows that the future is in alternative energy resources.

Thanks to Senator Betts

We're getting to the end here. Thanks once again to Senator Betts for coming here to talk with us (and also for being the the initial lab-rat in our now successful live-blogging experiment). Best of luck in your race from all of us at Future Majority and please stop in anytime - the diaries are always open and we'd love to get updates on your progress.

You can support the Senator by visiting his website.

Next Thursday we're going to be talking to Andrew Rice who is running for Senate in Oklahoma. And maybe we'll try out that new liveblogging software suggested by nviviani. Thanks all!

We are behind you!

We have your back Don! Get it done!
